An Apple a day won't do much good if you're breathing in air polluted by coal.

Sorry for the pun. But really...Apple isn't struggling, it can afford to do this.

After pressure from Greenpeace, Apple declared its newest data centre would all be powered by renewables. Not bad. But they could do better. I'm sure they've got more than one data centre.

Same letter, new CEO...here we go!
The Letter

Thank you for making Apple's new NC data centre powered all by renewables. But the other data centres should still have their energy sources converted away from coal. The coal-fired power plants that energize your giant data centers are one of the world’s top sources of airborne carcinogens and greenhouse gases.

You’ve probably seen the Greenpeace International report confirming just how much coal is being burned to keep all those servers online. It casts quite a cloud over all that IT innovation, but the facts are easy to see: Our data is downright dirty.

But you have an opportunity to clear things up, leading us toward the realization of IT that is powered by the sun and the wind, not dirty coal. Here’s what you can do to make it happen:

- Make it company policy to seek renewable energy when siting your data centres.
- Urge your electricity suppliers to move away from dirty energy
generation, investing instead in renewable energy generation, capacity, and efficiency.
- Advocate full transparency of your energy use and carbon footprint for all products, as well as your cloud presence.
- Encourage your product suppliers and manufacturers to adopt similar policies, and give preferences to green suppliers

As an environmentally aware digital citizen, I'm asking you to help us all breathe a little easier by working with Greenpeace to create a world where data centres powered by dirty coal are a thing of the past. Along with being the source of so many IT breakthroughs, you'll literally give us all a breath of fresh air.
A recent study estimated that one third of all daily internet users will access an Amazon cloud site on average at least once a day; Greenpeace believes 64% of Amazon's electricity comes from coal.

It has been called to my attention that KFC's packaging is made from rainforests in Indonesia, including the habitat of the endangered Sumatra tiger.

Please change your packaging to include mainly recycled material, and ensure fibers used are from better managed forests (or from some of the many alternative sources of packaging materials).

I will make sure to discourage family and friends from purchasing KFC until this has been corrected.

An important demographic which hasn't gotten much mention during this project re: Enbridge is First Nations.

Enbridge says that 60% of First Nations are on board with the pipeline (they will get 10% ownership); although many believe this to be inflated. Enbridge isn't winning a lot of trust, given the oversimplified-to-the-point-of-deception video about the tanker routes:

I'm not really sure who to write to that is of particular relevance to First Nations, so I'll just send some support to Heritage Minister Moore, who was "the first cabinet member to publicly express doubt and criticism of the project" (source).

“Clark’s demands are more than reasonable in a province where environmentalism trumps cash, tourism and the fishery are economic mainstays, and aboriginal treaty rights remain unclear.”

As mentioned, there is massive criticism on all sides. Criticism I agree with:

It's probably not helpful to boycott national energy strategy talks. Times like this need conversation. She should attend, and get more people onboard. At least it gave lots of publicity...

The mainstay - even with conditions, spills are gonna happen. Environmentalists and First Nations aren't happy at the prospect of the pipeline going through just because BC gets more money.

Today's Letter

To: Honourable Premier Redford

I know this letter isn’t going to change your opinion on the Enbridge pipeline. But I think it’s important for you to hear as many voices of dissent as possible.

To quote David Suzkui, we should not support this the proposed national energy strategy “because it’s focused more on tar sands, pipelines, and markets than on getting Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions under control by shifting from fossil fuel dependency to a more efficient system based on conservation and renewable energy.”

I'm happy that the Enbridge pipeline will have increased environmental safety measures, but is it enough? Canada's wilderness is unique and important...trying out these regulations seems like a science experiment we don't really need. Let's experiment with greener jobs and renewable energy instead, where the biggest "spills" are much more benign.

Here are some other reasons I think the pipeline isn't the best idea:

1) Expense. Building the pipeline is a significant amount of money, and making it to a high safety standard will be cost prohibitive. At the end of the day, it’s nearly impossible to guarantee that there will be no spills or accidents. It’s not worth the costs required to make the margin smaller.

2) Spills happen from time to time. The pipeline is often in more remote areas, which means workers have to work at a very high level of safety which is difficult and expensive. Renewable energy and energy conservation (if done well) is much safer, both for workers and the environment.

3) Comparative advantage and foreign currency. Countries such as China are using solar panels and wind power at an increasing rate. If we work hard and become experts at creating renewable energy and energy efficiency or smart grid systems, we can still sell our products and expertise and gain money there.

4) Global reputation. Investing in the pipeline will not make us popular internationally. Everyone can benefit from what we learn if we invest in renewables and efficiency instead, even those with which we could have traded oil. A few friends and a world of unhappiness, or a world where everyone appreciates and respects our protectiveness.

5) The Environment, Tourism, and Canada's Identity. Canada is famous for its natural resources. Most Canadians are proud of their wilderness, even if the majority of their contact is going to a friend's cottage once a year. Tourism generates a large amount of revenue and jobs, which would be at risk if there was a spill of some sort.

She set out 5 conditions including

"Deploying world-leading marine oil-spill response, prevention and recovery systems for B.C.'s coastline and ocean" and

"Ensuring British Columbia receives a fair share of the fiscal and economic benefits of a proposed heavy oil project that reflects the level, degree and nature of the risk borne by the province, the environment and taxpayers."

Of course, the latter condition is the one which has been the most controversial. More money?!

No one is happy, though....many environmentalists and First Nations say the conditions are token, won't prevent spills, and put BC on sale to the highest bidder. Pipeline supporters are unhappy about the more money part.
I applaud your tough stance on the Enbridge Pipeline. While you have been plagued by criticism, I think it is important that someone takes a stand. Please keep going and don’t listen to the naysayers!

Your stance was an important factor in Enbridge committing to another $500m in safety measures.
Still, it’s not enough. As Suzuki said:

Clarification: Having worked at an oil company, I know what counts as a spill. It can be something incredibly small in the realm of a few litres.

Judging from their own CSR reports, it's over 6 million gallons (~160,000 barrels) from 1999- 2010. People living or working nearby a spill feel it more, but it still affects everyone when the environment is sullied.
Today's Letter
Definitely won't do anything (unlike publicly commenting here to the government of Canada). It's a general letter of dissent to Enbridge. What are they going to do, change their entire business? Not likely.

But it's important to add to the dissenting voices (although I wonder if the more people writing into them, the more they will expend on shiny PR campaigns).

To: Enbridge

The Enbridge safety and environmental record is far from perfect. While this is understandable to a degree, even with proposed improvements it is not likely that Canadian citizens will want the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline.

The number of people in the public that support the pipeline may well be dwarfed by those who do not, which should be a consideration given the anticipated expenditure.

Thank you.

Official Letter of Comment
Pretty much the same as all the other letters I've written so far about this:

Canada's wilderness is unique and important...trying out these regulations seems like a science experiment we don't really need. Here are some other reasons I think the pipeline isn't the best idea:

Here's a snippet with some information I didn't know about Canada's wilderness:

How big of a difference will the $500m make? No one knows until we try it out, as the measures are to be "world-leading".

Today's letter is to Canada's environment minister, and once again it's recycled.

Letter
From my quick bout of web searching, the Environmental Minister hasn't been too behind much environmental stuff lately. Disappointing. Shouldn't his job be "That darn Hippy Minister always fighting for the whales and whatever" or at least, "That darn Minister, always forcing us to take a step back and reconsider our decisions and their impact on the environment" ?

Instead of quotes from Kent such as "Pipelines are still, by far, the safest way to transport petrochemicals in any form," how about "There are things we can put some large-scale investment in, beyond petrochemicals"?

I'm happy that the Enbridge pipeline will have increased environmental safety measures, but is it enough? Canada's wilderness is unique and important...trying out these regulations seems like a science experiment we don't really need. Let's experiment with greener jobs and renewable energy instead, where the biggest "spills" are much more benign.

Here are some other reasons that, as Environment Minister, you should consider and include in your opinions when asked about supporting the pipeline:

1) Expense. Building the pipeline is a significant amount of money, and making it to a high safety standard will be cost prohibitive. At the end of the day, it’s nearly impossible to guarantee that there will be no spills or accidents. It’s not worth the costs required to make the margin smaller.

It makes far more fiscal sense to invest the money by increasing renewable energy, increasing the efficiency with which we use our energy, and investing in better infrastructure so that people are more likely to live close to home and are able to walk or bike to work. These new skill requirements will create a huge amount of jobs.

Canada (particularly BC) is famous for its natural resources. Most Canadians are proud of their wilderness, even if the majority of their contact is going to a friend's cottage once a year. Tourism generates a large amount of revenue and jobs, which would be at risk if there was a spill of some sort.

Do I expect the Enbridge pipeline to continue? Absolutely.

But there's always a small chance enough people will voice their opinions against it here, and stand behind a government committed to finding better ways to support our population.

Have you seen The Story of Change yet? It's from the same people as The Story of Stuff. They pull out the big guns for this one in a large call for a generally positive but undetermined future. Excellent image:

One of its messages is that a better future can't be made by buying greener/more ethical products (though it's a part of it), but by exercising our "citizen muscle" to change the game.
Minister of Natural Resources is a paradoxical position to be in - how to best use our resources to support the planet. When to use, when to conserve?

The Enbridge pipeline may create many jobs, but it makes more sense to use the precautionary principle - Canada should encourage investment in renewable energy and green jobs. Here are some of the main reasons why the pipeline shouldn't be built:

Several friends, people who usually never care about environmental issues, told me they don't want a pipeline.

Yet none of them have done anything to stop it.

So, here it is. Most people need to see an ad flash across screens/billboards/radios several times before taking action. Hopefully this topic in peoples' newsfeeds will be one more poke, and they will use the resources here to share their opinions with relevant government and companies.

This stuff is complex, it changes daily (e.g. the latest spill in Wisconsin). Share your findings here so everyone can get a better understanding.

Or go on public record to the government's registry sharing your opinions here, open until Aug 31st.

Starting Point: Summary of Key Issues from The Canadian Press

Route: Northern Gateway would run between Bruderheim, Alta., northeast of Edmonton, to a marine terminal at Kitimat B.C. on the northern coast.

Length: 1,172 kilometres

Estimated Cost: ~$5.5 billion (source)

Capacity: The oilsands line would have a capacity of 525,000 barrels of oil per day, while the condensate line would carry 193,000 barrels per day.

Construction: The vast majority of the pipe would be buried up to a metre underground, except at some water crossings where it's safer to run the line above ground.

Construction jobs: Enbridge estimates construction will create about 62,700 person-years of employment over three years of construction. During peak construction, 2,000 to 3,000 people will work on building the pipelines and their associated facilities. [Note this has been contested in studies such as here]

Permanent jobs: Permanent pipeline operations would directly employ 104 people at various locations throughout Alberta and B.C., about half of whom would work in Kitimat.

Alternatives*: Some Canadian crude can access the West Coast through Kinder Morgan's 300,000 barrel-per-day Trans Mountain pipeline, which runs from near Edmonton to the B.C. Lower Mainland and Washington State. Kinder Morgan is looking to expand that line.

*A Letter A Day's Note: There are many other alternatives, which we will discuss in upcoming posts

Critics: Environmental, First Nations and other groups have spoken out against Northern Gateway. They say Enbridge can't guarantee there won't be a spill from the line itself or from a tanker along the coast and that such a spill would devastate the ecosystem.

Proponents: Enbridge has framed Northern Gateway as a matter of national interest, as it would help Canada become less reliant on a single oil export market: the United States. The ability to ship crude to Asia would get Canadian oil producers a better price for their crude. Suncor Energy Inc., Total E&P Canada, Cenovus Energy Corp., Nexen Inc. and MEG Energy Corp. are among the oilsands producers who back Northern Gateway.

Aboriginals: Some 130 B.C. First Nations, most of which have not signed treaties, have spoken out against the project. Enbridge has offered dozens of aboriginal groups a 10 per cent stake in the project, and says support has been strong.

The Letter
Which brings to the first letter, to the great Prime Minister of Canada himself. I'm not sure if this is the right guy to direct this to, maybe some of the more savvy campaigns will be able to recommend better people to e-mail this to.

Letters may get more complex as I learn more, but most will be recycled as the days go on.

In the meantime, this is just some of my own common and professional sense. Got any corrections, lemme know!
They're 5/8 in Canadian and 12/20 in US rankings.

One of the positive steps they've made is "partnered with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to help the company trace all of its seafood back to the sea and identify ways to engage with the fisheries and farming operations" (GP).

This is no surprise, despite many issues with Wal-Mart, a lot of their sustainability initiatives have been proper: beyond glitz and PR, tacking the more systemic, difficult, and long-term issues such as improving products along the supply chain.

I am happy to see Wal-Mart’s work with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to begin tracing seafood’s origins and finding ways to engaging fisheries and farming operations to creative positive change. Other accomplishments: getting rid of Atlantic cod, exploring better sourcing options for your tuna line, and requiring pilot fresh fish vendors to adhere to the Wal-Mart sustainability policy.

But, there are some areas that need improving, as per Greenpeace's website:

Decrease the sale of these species: Fraser River sockeye salmon, Alaska pollock, tropical shrimp & prawns, farmed Atlantic salmon, Atlantic sea scallops, and canned yellowfin tuna.

Map out how Wal-Mart's sustainability policy will cover other products containing ingredients from the sea like chowder, pet food and sauces.

Create more detailed information on seafood labels

Thank you!

Also, Amnesty writes the letter for you, so the lazy bonus is strong!

This letter is for two indigenous leaders detained in Mexico for legitimately increasing access to water. They are to spend 7 years in prison for a crime they didn't do because of their work with water. Full story here.
Dear President Calderón,

I am writing to you to express my deep concern regarding the unfair trial of José Ramón Aniceto Gómez y Pascual Agustín Cruz, two indigenous human rights defenders from the Nahuan community of Atla, in the municipality of Pahuatlán, Puebla State.

They have already spent more than two years in prison for a crime they did not commit as the result of their work to guarantee access to water in their community. In 2010, they were detained, tried and sentenced to almost seven years in prison by Puebla state courts.

The two men are prisoners of conscience and Amnesty International will campaign on their behalf until they are released. The human rights organisation has documented many of the irregularities which resulted in the unsafe conviction of José Ramón Aniceto Gómez y Pascual Agustín Cruz, including the denial of their right to an impartial hearing, equality before the law, the presumption of innocence, and the right to an effective defence.

I welcome the fact that the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has decided to review the case, as it is essential to correct the injustices that the two men have faced and to remedy the human rights violations committed against them.

Mr President, I call on your government to ensure José Ramón Aniceto Gómez y Pascual Agustín Cruz’s immediate and unconditional release, to guarantee a full and impartial investigation into their unfair detention and trial and to hold to account those responsible.

Poor Policy, Energy Minister Bentley?Ever heard of cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP)? If you're reading from Europe, there's a good chance you've enjoyed its benefits.

North America typically uses natural gas for heating or electricity. CHP lets you do both simultaneously - use natural gas to generate electricity, and the waste heat can also be used for heating. It’s way more efficient, saves money, and decreases emissions.

CHP can be used independently for a large factory or building, or it can be built to feed back into the grid. Many homes in Europe are heated from nearby industrial plants' waste fuel.

Why don't we use it?
Meh, probably because it's just not that common here.
It's not the first thing that comes to mind when building a place.

The International Energy Agency thinks CHP could provide 35% of electricity in G8+5 countries by 2040. Not bad.

How does it relate to today's letter?
It's a bit of a stretch, but here goes (sorry, 'tis a long one):

CHP is one of the many conservation measures Ontario should use.

Instead, Ontario’s new Industrial Electricity Incentive Program makes electricity cheaper for companies building new plants (>$250million) or expanding operations. When is this a good idea?? I feel like this encourages companies to create operations which aren’t sustainable.

As always, creating new jobs is cited as a reason. But there are smarter ways to create jobs. According to the Ontario Clean Air Alliance (OCAA),

“The objective of creating jobs, making our industries more competitive, and spurring economic growth could be achieved much more intelligently – and at a much lower cost – by working with industries to improve their energy productivity (see, for example, Energy Efficiency Engine of Economic Growth in Eastern Canada)”

I briefly checked out OCAA's website, while I haven’t had time to check most of their sources I’m confident of the general premise, so I’ll get behind them with a letter today.

OCAA recommends e-mailing Energy Minister Bentley and asking him "to create sustainable jobs and lower electricity bills by investing in energy efficiency. Please tell him that subsidizing the wasteful consumption of high-cost electricity is a fool’s game."

I'll be sending snail mail, but go ahead and e-mail him if you've got the time! Feel free to steal the wording.

To: Hon Minister Bentley,

I do not support the Industrial Electricity Incentive Program. There are smarter ways to create jobs - it is likely that this program will encourage wasteful usage of electricity. Our laws should be doing the opposite.

Let's use things like incentives and policy encouraging cogeneration and other measures recommended by the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario.

Why?

Antibiotics
Most of those succulent shrimp grow on crowded farms, disease is rampant, which is combated by pumping the shrimp (and, by extension, us) with antibiotics...some which have been banned in the USA.

If the States banned something, you know it's pretty bad.
Shrimp farms destroy coastal mangrove forests (pictured), which are important stores of carbon and biodiversity. After five years so much sludge builds in farms they are unusable.

Not all shrimp are farmed, though...so you don't have to give them up altogether. That's why we need better labelling, something many of my letters have asked for.
Exciting news, though, from last year:
"After nearly a year of pressure by Greenpeace supporters Costco announced it has stopped selling a dozen threatened species of red listed fish in a corporate effort to provide customers with a choice of sustainable seafood products only. [...] they enlisted the online assistance of over 100,000 people who sent messages to Costco’s CEO demanding real progress"

As a Costco customer and enthusiast, I'm happy to see the progress Costco has made towards improving its seafood policy. But much must be done before I recommend Costco to friends based on seafood.

To quote Greenpeace's website directly:

Costco’s seafood sourcing policy only covers fresh and frozen seafood. Canned seafood products and other product categories like pet food are not covered.

The company has not identified any progress on seeking alternatives for the remaining Redlist species on sale.

Information about the company’s seafood sustainability initiatives is not readily available to its members in stores or on the website.

Costco seafood products do not provide enough information about where and how the species was caught or farmed to help its members make more informed purchasing decisions.

Thank you very much.

In the pre-humans-taking-over-planet era, fish were one of the healthiest foods around. Today, there are at least two major health concerns with fish: heavy metals (e.g. mercury) and antibiotics.

Luckily, avoiding fish on the RedList can also be good for your health.

1. Mercury stays in your body, and can be passed down to vulnerable babies through their mothers.

Easy Rule of Thumb?
"I shall have the smallest fish your restaurant has to offer, sire"

The bigger fish are more likely to have gathered a lot of mercury throughout their lifetime of snacking on little fish.

Sweet! Shrimp are tiny! I'm good to go, right?!

Er....not so fast....here's tomorrow's blog entry if you want the details (click shrimpy):

I am a current customer of your supermarket, and would like to thank you for the great strides you have made in creating more sustainable seafood - from removing several Redlist species, launching a trailblazing labeling program, and finalizing a 2014 implementation date for your sustainability policy.

However, your red-graded identifying system should be improved, according to Greenpeace, "[at times] it does not necessarily reflect the urgency of the situation in some fisheries and aquaculture operations".

The letters sent to Co-op and Loblaw about seafood were
still fairly accurate about what they need to work on, luckily. I'll still go back and update the posts to reflect these changes, as well as include some dissenting info. about catch shares.

Greenpeace ranked major grocery stores for how well they are doing in terms of sustainable seafood, then asked customers to write encouraging their stores to get better.

Many stores have improved since GP started doing this a couple years ago; there's a good chance some success was due to avid letter writers (validation!).
I like that they have both kudos and criticism, reflecting the slightly more positive and diplomatic approach which many environmentalists are taking these days.

Shares grow in value as the fish are replenished. This increases fishers' stewardship, decreasing the "perverse incentive" to get as many fish as possible; in the long run overfishing would only leave fishermen without jobs.

I don't think the solution is only about better fishing practices, there is a lot going on globally such as increased temperatures and ocean acidification which will impact this stuff. But it's a start.

Update: Some Opposing Views on Catch Shares

A long post about the drawbacks of catch share, most of the
arguments are consistent with the double edged sword of market
mechanisms. I haven't read much else from this blog, but this single
article did bring up issues like: Grandfathering, disempowering smaller
groups, rewarding those who were initially wasteful, and puts it at risk
of becoming "a highly controlled financial trading scheme dominated by investors and industrial seafood producers".

What
do you think? Is it worth doing (in short term maybe) despite all of
this so that we can at least save our fish and fishermen? Are there ways
catch share could work but minimize some of the above problems? Or
should we come up with better solutions? What might they be?

Another hit against is that EDF is a really big fan of
catch share, but its board has many large financial institution people
for example from like Morgan Stanely. Good point, they would definitely
have a vested interest. I like EDF because instead of fully shunning
large organizations, they try to work with them. But is that going a bit
too far?

The Daily Letter
Today's letter is supporting more sustainable commercial fishing
practices - via a grocery store. There will be some more context in
tomorrow's post as I'm trying to keep entries short.
As a customer of your excellent grocery stories, I'm writing today about our role in the health of fisheries worldwide.

Your customers/owners and employees can only stand to benefit from having a long term supply of fish to consume. Co-op has already started to play a role in this by not selling several Redlist species; increasing customer awareness and finding alternatives to the SeaChoice “Avoid” list.
But there's still a lot to be done. I would like to see Co-op develop a phase-out plan for species such as farmed Atlantic salmon; including other products containing "Avoid" species such as pet food and supplements; and decreasing the sale of: Atlantic cod, haddock, farmed Atlantic salmon, Atlantic sea scallops, tropical shrimp and prawns, yellowfin tuna.
